Article vs Blog: Why You Should Write More Long Form Content

Short form content has long been the industry norm for content writing, and for good reason. The shorter, more concise blog was better for keeping attention spans and stopping the dreaded bounce thought to come from the initial “no thanks” reaction of seeing a large chunk of words. And, let’s be frank, short blogs are a lot easier to write.

With the rise of SEO, the internet is filled with an excess of short, keyword-stuffed, and sadly, poorly-written content.

Why Short Blogs Are No Longer as Effective

Higher Competition and Content Saturation

No matter how unique you try to make your content or keywords, chances are there is already a similar short form piece on the web. Years of popularity skyrocketed the quantity of short blogs. And no matter how much you optimize your SEO, you’re not going to outrank competitors with another short blog. Almost every content idea under the sun has been quickly sought out and included in a keyword-stuffed article by a writer trying to get as many clicks as possible.

The Value of Longer Articles

  • Establishing Reliability – Longer, quality articles make your brand look more knowledgeable and reliable.
  • Increasing Screen Time – The longer your article is, the longer the user will stay on your page. However, this only applies if you write valuable, interesting content. It’s all about quality.
  • Getting More Shares – Longer content gets more shares. If you want your readers posting your work to their Facebook wall, take the time to really teach them something.

Avoid the Fluff and Outrank the Competition

Keep in mind that simply lengthening content without adding any value will not lead to ROI improvement. The problem facing short form content? A chunk of it is essentially fluff. If you write a long article without including comprehensive information and taking the time to establish well thought out concepts, the only content you are creating is fluff on steroids.

And nobody wants to read that beast.

Google wants to rank quality content and they are continually improving their ability to recognize it. If you put in the effort to answer a question, and answer it well, Google algorithms are more likely to recognize the quality of your content and rank you higher.

Quick Tips for Improving Longer Articles

  • Add links
  • Use exact match anchor text
  • Make it more interactive
  • Incorporate long-tail keywords
  • Aim for more than 2,000 words

Finding a Balance

Long form content is valuable, but should you stop writing short blogs? Absolutely not. All content lengths have their niche, and just as short-form content fell from grace, chances are that long form content will one day lose its crown as the “it” form.

Whether short or long, the most important things to keep in mind are quality and relevancy. Try to keep a good blend of different content types when you write for the web. Choose wisely, and don’t get stuck in one arena.

Whatever you write, make it count.
