KC Startup, PayIt, Drags Government into the Digital Age

If you ask the average citizen what their least favorite activity is, chances are high that “waiting in line” is near the top of their list.

Long waiting times are just one of the many complaints we all have about government services. Along with outdated systems and complex processes, dealing with the government is often, simply put, inconvenient.

In our increasingly digital world, where most services can be accessed with a touch of a button, consumers today have become accustomed to convenience. As a result, visiting the DMV can feel archaic, almost like going back in time.

However, a Kansas City startup is changing all of that.

KC-based tech company, PayIt, is on a mission to simplify doing business with the government.

With its digital government and payment platform, the business is transforming the customer experience and making government three things almost never associated with the government: modern, convenient and mobile.

What It Does

PayIt’s slogan is “Government Simplified.” The patent-pending platform offers convenient, mobile solutions for a wide variety of areas, including courts and citations, motor vehicle services, taxes, utilities, health and human services and many more. Basically, the platform covers just about any government need you may have.

With PayIt’s iKan app, for the first time, Kansas residents can renew their driver’s license right from their smartphone or computer. You can also easily register vehicles, pay property taxes, or request copies of your birth certificate.

The platform even allows citizens to easily reach out to their local government on matters such as potholes, code violations or debris caused by a storm. Users are able to upload from phones and send location coordinates to enable a quick response.

Fast Growth

PayIt’s success has been fast-paced. The company has raised $8 million in capital, grown its revenue 10x year-over-year and added 10 new employees since its inception in late 2013.

The company has already received several honors, including being named as one of Startland’s Top Kansas City Startups to Watch in 2018, as well as a Top Ten Government Tech Startup of the Year 2018 by CIO Review. It has also been recognized as a top 100 government tech firm in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

“We’ve been winning more contracts with cities, counties and states across the country, so a lot of growth there, and then just ramping up the pace of innovation for our clients — more services through the technology, more capability,” said Founder and CEO, John Thomson.

Formula for Success

PayIt’s success is owed to a simple business principle: it provides a solution to a problem. Consumers have long complained of inconveniences when it comes to government services, from long lines to packed parking lots.

The company addresses this universal frustration and provides an effective solution that is long overdue. As Thomson points out, PayIt’s cloud-based system is in stark contrast to older methods of building custom software that quickly becomes antiquated before agencies can use it. Therefore, it fills a gap in the market that has previously been neglected by startups.

The platform is not only helping to dramatically enhance citizen self-service, but it’s also helping to drive significant cost savings for government agencies. It’s a win-win for both the government and citizens.

“There’s a lot of demand for what we’re delivering into the market,” Thomson said. “We’ve emerged as the disruptive, innovative platform in this market full of old tech trying to play catch up. Savvy clients are partnering with us to ‘simplify government’ across a number of agencies.”
